AS AN ex-, very ex-highways engineer I am in complete agreement with Paul Smith (Letters, July 18, 'No such thing as danger road').

Traffic accidents, in the main, are caused by drivers not road layouts, and the proposals by Jean Robinson (Letters, August 1, 'Dangerous roads do exist') are both expensive and unnecessary.

The majority of accidents on the A590 have occurred between Haverthwaite and Greenodd, and not one has been in the vicinity of a junction.
