A MOTHER who fought for as long as she could against cancer to see her daughters get married has sadly died at the age of 52.

Agnes Nicholson, also known as Aggy by friends and family, was a devoted mum who always prioritised other people’s needs ahead of her own.

Sometimes called ‘the glamour behind the counter’ Mrs Nicholson helped to develop the family business, the Key Cobbler, in the Market Place, Kendal, alongside her husband Mark.

Born on November 3, 1966 in Derry, Northern Ireland, Mrs Nicholson moved to England following the death of her father when she was only 14-years-old.

There she was a pupil at Our Lady’s Catholic High School, in Lancaster.

Shortly after leaving school, before creating the family business from the ground up, she held a number of jobs.

This included working night shifts at Asda, to being a dinner lady at St Joseph’s Primary School, in Lancaster.

Mrs Nicholson tied the knot with her lifelong best friend, Mark, on July 20, 2002, and the pair settled in Caton in 2005 with her daughters Sinéad and Leona.

Known as the matriarch of the family, Mrs Nicholson looked after everyone who came into the shop, from giving fashion advice to sharing jokes and stories - you could always hear her before you saw her.

In her free time, Mrs Nicholson would travel up and down the country with her husband in their campervan.

She also took part in a number of events to help fundraise for charity. This included a bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool.

Mrs Nicholson was loved for her wicked sense of humour, her kindness but also for her fight.

In May 2017, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and following a series of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery at she was given the all clear at the start of 2018.

Sadly, in November 2018 Mrs Nicholson was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. Her fight with cancer ended on Friday, August 9 at St John’s Hospice.

Mrs Nicholson’s family, would like to invite those who knew her to the funeral, to be held this Saturday at 10.30am at Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Church, Caton. This will be followed by a wake at the Ship Inn.

The family added, as Mrs Nicholson was not one to wear black, everyone was encouraged to wear colour at the service.
