MORE than 90 peer cent of Windermere rail commuters now put their season ticket on a Smart card instead of the traditional paper version.

The figure, revealed in a survey by rail operator Northern, meant the station's users came third out of more than 150 areas surveyed across the North of England.

From this week, all of Northern’s ticket machines can be used to validate or top-up a Smart card and the company hopes extended use of the machines will reduce hassle and delays due to queueing for season ticket renewals, especially at peak times on Monday mornings.
