CONISTON:

‘COPPER (in our) Veins’ exhibition and sculpture trail runs until October 6.

This collaborative project features works by artists Jessica Elleray and Siobhan Miles-Moore, who use copper in exciting and unique ways.

Their work is presented both in an exhibition at the Ruskin Museum and in a heritage trail around the Coppermines Valley.

WILLIAM Henry Preece Wireless Communications celebration will take place on Saturday, August 24 (10am-4pm), to mark 130 years since William Preece sent the very first known wireless morse code transmission in Coniston.

The Quantum Technology Club will be in attendance demonstrating various forms of wireless communication and Morse code from outside the Ruskin Museum.

This is an opportunity to go along and try your hand at sending and receiving messages, communicating with other wireless communication enthusiasts over hundreds of miles and if conditions are favourable, thousands of miles using various modes.

Youngsters get the chance to build their very own Morse key that they can take away with them completely free of charge.

CROSSCRAKE:

PRESIDENT Sue Tetlow welcomed 54 members and four visitors to the July meeting of Crosscrake WI. The Kitty Brown fashion show had been very enjoyable and had raised £354.

Items in the WI News were brought to the members attention and they were encouraged to enter items for the Westmorland County Show and to volunteer as stewards. Several interesting future talks had been arranged by the federation.

The president asked members to seriously consider joining the committee in November as some committee members were leaving, for various reasons. The speaker for July was Pat Newstram, who gave an interesting illustrated presentation on Lady Ann Clifford.

The Betrayal by Helen Dunmore was the chosen book for the reading group.

The walking group did two walks, one to Farleton Knott and an evening walk to Scout Scar. They have a walk at Barbon planned and an evening walk to Kendal Castle on August 29.

Also, 25 members gathered at Ye Olde Fleece in Kendal to begin a Murder Mystery treasure hunt organised by Sheila Andrews and Gill Farrand. Clues had to be solved to eliminate suspects and weapons. The winners were Lesley Singleton and Gail Eaton who now have the accolade of setting next year’s treasure hunt!

Fifty-five members attended the August meeting. The programme for 2020 is now complete. The Sedgwick emergency committee WI cascade list is being reviewed. Several members had enjoyed the Burneside Brass Band concert.

The reading group has read The Partisan’s Daughter by Louis de Bernieres.

The speaker for the evening was Stephen Halliwell, who took the group on a month-by-month visit to Gresgarth Hall Gardens. His enthusiasm, humour and excellent photographs were most enjoyable.

Rummikub meets on the first Monday of the month.

The next meeting of the WI is on September 10 when Kirkby Lonsdale Handbell Ringers will be visiting.

CROSTHWAITE:

CROSTHWAITE Village Hall Committee is holding an indoor games evening on September 21 (7pm-9pm).

This is a free to enter family friendly event. There will be a range of indoor games and pass times on offer, including table tennis, darts, dominoes and indoor boules, open to individuals and teams of two. There will also be various games and prizes every type of amusements suitable for all ages. For the less energetic, there will be a trivia quiz and two bingo games with cash prizes.

Take your loose change as there will be a charge to play each game and there will be cash prizes for winners. Refreshments will be on sale. The committee hopes that the community will support this event and enjoy a fun evening. For more information look out for the posters posted around the village.

CROSTHWAITE and Lyth Bowling Club held its Smith Cup challenge. The winner was Norman Richardson with the runner-up being George Swanwick. The trophy and prizes were presented by the competition secretary Penny Blair. Later, members enjoyed a Jacob’s Join lunch.

DENT:

A TABLE-top sale will be held on Saturday, August 24 (10am-1pm) at Dentdale Memorial Hall. It will include many stalls, soft play for children and refreshments.

DENT gala is to take place on bank holiday Monday, August 26 (noon). It will start with a fancy dress show then continue with a dog show, family races, games, sideshows, activity tent as well as various stalls. Alongside the gala, the WI will serve lunch and teas in the hall. These events are being held in aid of the upkeep of the memorial hall.

A SUMMER barbecue has been re-arranged for August 31 (4pm) at St John’s Church, Cowgill. It is in aid of funds for the upkeep of the church.

ENDMOOR:

MORE THAN 20 people took part in a bowling match between The Club Inn and Endmoor Bowling Club. The result was declared a draw and the participants ended the evening with pie and peas at the inn.

ST PATRICK’S Church is organising a short walk on Sunday, August 25 (10.45am) followed by a picnic lunch back at the church. Walkers are asked to take a packed lunch to leave at the church for when they return. Cake and drinks will be supplied.
