CROSTHWAITE...

CROSTHWAITE and Lyth WI held its August open meeting when 36 members and guests enjoyed high tea at The Courtyard Café, Holker Hall, followed by a tour of the Bay Search and Rescue base at Flookburgh.

Chairman Gary Parsons and members of the team gave the visitors a tour of the base, which included several of their 14 specialist vehicles. Team members were on hand to explain how the vehicles are used and to demonstrate the specialist equipment which they carry. This was followed by an informative presentation showing the wide-ranging tasks undertaken by the service. Although the charity was set up in response to the unique rescue challenges presented by the fast tides and quicksand of Morecambe Bay, the specialist all-terrain vehicles are frequently called upon by fire and emergency services to assist in flood rescue, swift water rescue, extreme weather emergencies and wild fires.

The work of the charity is remarkable in that they receive no Government support, relying entirely on charitable donations, sponsorship and fundraising.

ST MARY’S Church is holding a Songs of Praise style service on Sunday, September 1 (4pm). There is still time to have your favourite hymn included in the service. Telephone the Rev Michael Woodcock before the end of August on 015395-68276.
