SEDBERGH...

IT WAS a perfect first day of the Sedbergh Folk Festival at the Black Bull. A great range of bands kept the audience entertained, from the unplugged punk of Pompy’s Heroes to the purer folk of Errant Thieves. Undoubtedly, the sun and the variety of beers and ciders also played their part in creating a relaxed atmosphere. It was gratifying to the organisers to see such a range of people of all ages enjoying themselves.

SHAP...

SHAP Community CIO (Community Interest Organisation) held a celebration at The Old Courthouse to mark the completion of work carried out to improve accessibility to the building - the culmination of two years of hard work securing grant funding and overseeing the project.

Plans for the work were drawn up by 2030 Architects, Penrith. The building work was carried out under the direction of John Jackson of Tirril, and included lowering a floor inside the building, refurbishing a small kitchen, creating an outdoor terrace and adding a new entrance porch, making the building fully accessible throughout. Hanson provided the materials for resurfacing of the forecourt and this work was carried out by D and P Richardson.

The event was attended by representatives from the various funding bodies, Cumbria County Council, Eden District Council and other organisations and individuals who support activities and library service users at The Old Courthouse. Local artists and crafts people who exhibit their work in the gallery at The Old Courthouse were also in attendance. Entertainment was provided for children and those young at heart by Irwin Wallace, Penrith. Local teenager, Isaac Dobson, played music on his guitar while visitors looked around the building and had the opportunity to view the wonderful paintings and photographs on display in the gallery for the Railway Art exhibition.

Janet Wood, chair of trustees said “It was hard work securing the £115,000 we required for this project which is our latest phase of development since our charity was set up and the building transferred to us by Cumbria County Council four years ago. We are very grateful to funders; Leader Fells and Dales, Cumbria Community Foundation (Holehird Trust), Eden District Community Fund, Foyle Foundation, Frieda Scott Charitable Trust, Hadfield Trust, Shap Community Enterprise, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund for their generous support and also to Hanson for their contribution of materials. This latest phase of work has given our centre more prominence and we hope it will lead to an increase in footfall from both members of the community and visitors to this special area, too. We appreciate the commitment given by our volunteers which makes it all possible. There are lots of opportunities for anyone who would like to be involved.”
