JEAN Fry, president of Preston Patrick and Preston Richard Women’s Institute, welcomed Peter Waterhouse, reserves manager of Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Peter’s talk was entitled the Ospreys of Foulshaw Moss. Ospreys were completely wiped out in the UK during the early 1900s. In 1954 a pair returned to a loch in Scotland, and there are now around 300 pairs in the UK, 280 of them in Scotland, and eight in Cumbria. In 2001 the first pair were at Bassenthwaite. The birds first started breeding at Foulshaw Moss in 2014 and there have been 16 chicks so far. Ospreys eat only fish and with excellent eyesight can see their prey from a height of 200 metres. The birds arrive every April and leave again in mid-September. At Foulshaw Moss cameras are set up to record the activity in the nests, egg laying, hatching and later, the chicks taking their first flight.
