The Prime Minister has confirmed he was tabling a motion to call for an early general election.

MPs tonight voted in favour of allowing a cross-party alliance to take control of the Commons agenda on Wednesday in a bid to block a no-deal Brexit on October 31 by 328 votes to 301, majority 27.

After the Government's defeat, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he will be tabling a vote on an early general election on Wednesday.

He said: "The consequences of this vote tonight means that Parliament is on the brink of wrecking any deal that we might be able to get in Brussels.

"It will hand control of the negotiations to the EU."

Barrow MP John Woodcock did not support the motion.

He said: "A no-deal Brexit would be deeply damaging for our community but it would be as least as catastrophic to let Jeremy Corbyn and his hard-left cabal into Downing Street to axe the submarine programme. I will do anything in my power to stop either horror wrecking the lives of my constituents.

"I was concerned that this latest parliamentary manoeuvre could greatly increase the risk of Jeremy Corbyn prime minister so I felt unable to support it but I will keep an open mind in the days ahead when the bill is debated. It is vital that fellow MPs make clearer that they will not allow it to give a route to power to this man who deeply threatens Barrow jobs and UK national security."
