ARNSIDE and District Natural History Society will host two lectures tonight (Thursday, 7.30pm) at the WI Hall, Orchard Road. Lucy Gunson will talk about the Scotch Argus butterfly at Arnside Knott and Smardale and Alex Blomfield will follow with his talk on The Pearl-Bordered Fritillary of Morecambe Bay. 

THE autumn events of the Arnside RNLI fundraisers start with the annual coffee morning and book fair at the WI and village hall, on Saturday, September 14 (10am-noon). The team will then be out collecting at Kendal’s Marks and Spencer on September 20. Fish Week is October 7 to 11 during which various fundraising events are planned. Make an early start on your Christmas preparations at the annual charities fair at the WI and village hall on October 19; four charities are already signed up. Make a note in your 2020 diary that next year’s party in the park is to be held on June 6 at New Barns Caravan Park. This year, the event raised more than £3,500 for a new hovercraft at Morecambe RNLI station and planning is underway for a bigger party next year. MILLOM Court holds a Macmillan coffee morning on September 25 (10.30am). There will be a cake stall and a raffle.

HEVERSHAM Parish Council, together with ACT, are holding an open meeting on Wednesday, September 18 (7.30pm) at the Athenaeum (wine and nibbles from 7.15pm) to share the experience of other similar villages, hear people’s views and explore the possibilities for Heversham in the 2030s. SUSAN Ellis and Colin James together with Muriel Bolton and Robin Wharf won the bowling club’s last round Robin competition of the season. Sue Ellis is the club’s new ladies singles champion having beaten Dorothy Maudsley in the final. Semi-finalists were Muriel Bolton and Vera Alderson. John Alderson retained the men’s singles champion trophy beating John Smith in the final. Semi-finalists were Richard Blomfield and Bert Suttie.

LEVENS Institute’s monthly draw will take place tomorrow (Friday, 10am) at the institute. 

A CEILIDH is to be held at the institute on Saturday, September 14 (7.30pm) with live music from the Blue Jam Folk. There will be a licensed bar and a raffle, and all proceeds will be in aid of the NSPCC. Tickets available from the village shop. 

THE next meeting of Levens Local History Group will be on September 19 (7.30pm) at the institute, when Jeremy Roman-Robinson will give a talk on Long houses, bloomeries and the Manor of Witherslack.

LEVENS Tuesday Club will meet at in the Institute on Tuesday, September 17 (2pm) when Helen Clark will be giving a presentation on Bay Search and Rescue. There will be a raffle in aid of Bay Search and Rescue and tea, cake and biscuits will be served. Visitors are welcome to attend. During August, several members met and enjoyed playing dominoes and chatted over tea and cakes afterwards. Also, 25 members went to Keswick by coach and watched the matinee performance of Dear Uncle at the Theatre by the Lake, while others spent the day shopping and looking around Keswick 
 
CHRISTIANS Together will hold a recycling for good causes event on September 21 (10am-11.30am) at Levens Methodist Chapel. People are asked to take along old or current British and foreign currency, any postage stamps including first day covers, spectacles and sunglasses, jewellery, watches (broken or in working order), mobile phones (remember to remove sensitive material from the memory) and small electronic items such as sat-navs, iPods, games consoles and accessories, laptops and cameras. 

LEVENS Arts and Film Society will hold A journey through Europe with a Twist, an evening of music at the institute on September 21 (7.30pm) featuring the Viva Wind Quintet. For tickets telephone 015395-60534. 
 
A COFFEE morning will be held at the institute on September 21 to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support. 

A HARVEST supper will take place at the institute on the evening of September 23 when a two-course supper will be served followed by the auction of harvest gifts, in aid of the Bishops Harvest Fund supporting the Pigeon Pea Project in Malawi. Tickets will be available soon.

FOLLOWING the success of last year’s inauguaral event, the Storth Playing Fields Committee has organised a real ale festival to take place at the Heron Hall and on the playing field, tomorrow (Friday, 3pm-11pm) and Saturday, September 14 (noon- 11pm). Admission is free and there will be live music on Saturday afternoon and evening. Eighteen real ales and a large selection of gins and wines will be available. Refreshments will be on hand thanks to Al Fresco Catering of Silverdale. All funds raised will go to the upkeep of the hall and maintenance of children’s play equipment. 

FOLLOWING a popular workshop this year, co-director of C-Stem, Fran Ward, will return to Heron Corn Mill, Beetham, on November 16 for another day of Lego-based challenges, ranging from short and simple to time consuming and challenging. This workshop is again proving to be extremely popular with more than half the available spaces having already been claimed, so early booking is advised.
