MORE than 100 business representatives, residents, friends and Windermere town councillors gathered at the Hydro Hotel, Bowness, for the annual Windermere-In-Bloom Award Ceremony. The mayor of Windermere Cllr John Saunders welcomed the assembled guests before handing over to the master of ceremony Cllr Christine Hallatsch. The mayor, ably assisted by the town clerk Julie Hartley presented bronze, silver and gold certificates to the recipients in the various categories. The overall trophy winners were - Pat Holmes Cup for a small guest house: Virginia Cottage. South Lakes Tourism Trophy for large guest house: Elim Bank Guest House. Lakes Hospitality Trophy for hotels, inns and public houses: Craig Manor Hotel. Windermere Lions Trophy for cafés or restaurants: Siam Restaurant. The Windermere and Bowness Chamber of Trade Claret Jug for commercial hanging baskets or tubs: Howbeck. The Tesco Shield for best decorated shop: Driftwood. Lakeland Trophy for commercial/non-commercial property: Beckside Guest House; Windermere-In-Bloom Community Trophy for containers, commercial: Braithwaite Fold CCC. Windermere-In-Bloom Crystal Swan for special or outstanding feature: 13, Fairfield Road. Staveley Crystal Award for residential: P. Applethwaite Green. Windermere Parish Council Trophy for one-off WOW!: Ellerdene Guest House. Rayrigg Motors for most colourful display: Rockwood and Lucerne; Windermere-In-Bloom Committee Trophy for best all-year-round display: 21 Ghyll Road. Leith Joseph Trophy for residential hanging baskets and tubs: West View. Windermere Parish Salver for terraced gardens: 13 Claife Close; Windermere and Bowness Civic Society for best domestic garden: Sunnyholme. The Soroptomists’ Trophy for best kept garden: Oldfield; AJHN Shield for alternative gardening: 77 Droomer Drive. TACT and Sustainable Gardening Award for sustainability: 36 Victoria Road North. The Walters Trophy for public amenity and spaces: Windermere Jetty: Overall winner: Tapios. The judging was carried out by Cumbria In Bloom.

BOWNESS Women’s Institute meet on Tuesday, September 17 (12.30pm) at the Marchesi Centre. The Rev Carole Marsden will be giving a talk entitled Second Childhood. There will be a competition themed on a Childhood Photograph.
