A “FEARFUL amount of entries” in the sheep class contributed to standards being higher than ever at the Bentham Agricultural Show.

Those who attended the event at Bentham Auction Mart, now in its 147th year, were treated to livestock judging, vintage vehicles, handicrafts and more.

President of the event, which took place last Saturday (September 7), was Jeanie Stainton, who has been involved with it for many years.

She said: I really enjoyed my day and would like to thank all those who helped make the show such a huge success. It’s a real credit to the whole community.”

Entries across the show were up slightly, with an increase particularly notable in the sheep section - in which chief steward Maurice Lawson described a “fearful amount of entries”.

Bryan Knowles, of Selside, near Kendal, retained the coveted ‘Supreme Champion’ sheep trophy, having won it last year when exhibiting his Rough Fell sheep for the first time.

Jeanie Stainton awarded the Young Farmers’ stand the best in show title due to the variety of activities on offer, including cow-milking and a judging competition. She gave ‘Best Exhibit in the Vintage Section’ to Daniel Chapman and his Fordson Dexta Tractor.

There was something for everyone at the event, with visitors ambling between handicraft, horticulture, trade and craft stalls in the glorious September sunshine.

Chairman John Dawson praised the members of Burton-in-Lonsdale Young Farmers Club and all the other willing volunteers who managed the gate and car park on the day.

He also pointed out that the show was dependent on the community who give up their time to make it work.
