A FORMER Kirkbie Kendal pupil has received a place into the prestigious Norland College in Bath.

Founded in 1892 the college is known worldwide for producing exemplary ‘nannies’ who have worked for the royal family as well as a large number of celebrities.

Emma Esty, 20, said she always wanted to work with children but it was when she was introduced to Norland College that she felt her journey into childcare truly began.

She left school after her GCSEs to go study childcare at Blackpool and at Fylde College before being accepted into the college.

“I knew this was where I wanted to go and it would be the perfect opportunity for me,” she said.

“I didn’t go through the traditional route, I didn’t do A-levels or go to sixth form and I remember a few people telling me that college may not be the best choice for me and that always stuck with me.

“But it motivated me to prove that you really can succeed even if you didn’t go to sixth form.”

As she may be working for high profile clients in the future Miss Esty will learn a particular set of skills throughout her training.

This includes being taught taekwondo as self-defence from potential attackers and learning how to control a skidding car in case they find themselves in a difficult situation.

However, Miss Esty will also be taught the necessities about food and nutrition, sewing, safeguarding and security.

Famous clients, past and present, include the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Anne and the Rolling Stone rockstar, Mick Jagger.

Starting this month Miss Esty will require to wear the traditional brown uniform, which was updated for the first time in 70 years in 2013.
