STUDENTS celebrated Ashfield Junior School’s 50th anniversary on Friday with a host of special events.

Songs about togetherness were sang to family members and parents in a special assembly.

And a memory tree was created by students of the entire Workington school, as a mosaic made from separate art pieces.

It was a collaboration, in keeping with the theme of the project ‘Together We Achieve.’ Each child designed a leaf or a part of the trunk. The colourful display now decorates the school hall. Headteacher Susan Frost said: “We wanted to work on a project that welcomed all of the children back from the summer holidays and got all the children working together.”

Ashfield’s memory tree is inspired by the work of iconic Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt. The piece borrows prominent features of his work, including patterns and gold leaves.

Mrs Frost found that this was fitting as the school is celebrating its golden anniversary.

Events were held throughout the week to celebrate, including activities hosted by Clever Clogs Learning of Manchester. The company provide activities to schools that are designed to break students out of their shell and encourage the development of leadership skills.

Ashfield Junior School students also worked with staff of Derwent Hill, an outdoor education centre, to complete teambuilding exercises on the school grounds.

Four choirs sang for parents and family members. Pupils of years three and four sang with later performances from years five and six.

All songs were chosen for their theme of togetherness, year three and four sang ‘Everything is Awesome’ from the Lego movie soundtrack followed by a performance of Teamwork from Mackenzie Ziegler. Year six closed the special anniversary celebration with a rendition of ‘We’re All In This Together’ from High School Musical.

Students put their own spin on the song and a group of performers impressed the crowd with a gymnastics display.

After the musical performances, family members were encouraged to enjoy a buffet and appreciate their work.
