A VILLAGE is hoping to hold its first ever Christmas tree and lighting ceremony this year.

As a way of “putting the heart back into the community” and following the devastation of Storm Desmond in 2015, Burneside residents, near Kendal, have been rallying to create the village’s first Christmas fair.

Generous donations have already been given by organisations including Cumbria County Council, United Utilities and Lakeland.

Nearly £20,000 has been raised so far.

However, the community is still £3,000 short from making the dream a reality.

Resident Gayle Howarth, chair of the Burneside Residents’ Parish Association (BRPA) said she was grateful for all of the donations received so far and described the support from the community as being ‘fantastic’.

“We really want to put the heart back into the community,” she said.

“Especially after Storm Desmond and the loss of our bridge this event will be perfect to generate a heart to the village.

“It’s really exciting for Burneside to be able to show our residents have rallied round, and that we have a community here.

“But costs are massive as we need an electric supply not only capable of running the tree lights but also events on the night too.”

The original target was £19,000 but this has since changed after residents indicated they wanted to create a fund that will provide for other community events throughout the year.

This included hosting a children’s outdoor cinema night as well as a music festival.

The village is sending out an appeal to local businesses or other organisations and individuals who may be able to donate.

In order to try to raise more funds, an auction is also being held and tickets can be bought through the Burneside Parish Residents’ Association page on facebook.

The deadline for the auction is September 29 and the Christmas Lights event is on November 24 at 5.30pm.

People can also donate either at Burneside Cricket Club, the fish and chip shop or the village shop.

You can also donate on the BRPA Facebook page.
