AT THE Windermere Town Council meeting, Cllr Legge provided details about HMS Undine, a vessel named and purchased by the people of Windermere (public subscription of £600k) and broken up in 1965. A local resident and ex-councillor, Frank Saunders, wished to present the town council with the ship’s pennant, badge and a painting he had completed himself. This would take place prior to the next meeting on October 16. There would be a small display made of the items in the town council chamber. Mayor Saunders reported on the recent Chamber of Trade meeting and the progress being made with the sculpture trail, which was coming along well. Also, he thanked everyone for the fast response to the request from the BBC to film early morning at the new Millerground play area. For children to be playing on the equipment at 6.50am was a real feat. He thanked Adrian Legge and deputy mayor Sandra Lilley for providing leadership, as he had not been able to be present. He also reported on an informal meeting that had been held that afternoon with South Lakeland District councillors Dyan Jones and Andrew Jarvis and council leader Giles Archibald, attended by the mayor, deputy mayor and town clerk. SLDC listened and took note of key issues which needed to be progressed together, including parking, coaches, Langstone House, Health and Welfare and electric charging points. Cllr Jarvis (Cumbria County Council and SLDC) agreed that the informal meeting was proactive and fruitful and well worth the time. He wished to endorse the success of the community in achieving such a transformation at Millerground and underlined the problems with disabled parking and access, which were being sorted out. Councillors approved grant applications as follows: Windermere Christmas Celebration, Friends of the 597 Bus; the approval to an order being placed for a further 1,000 native daffodils for Elleray Woods. This would utilise the remainder of the grant from the civic society. The council agreed to form the following focus groups: Information and Communications led by Cllr Kate Tripp, Parks and Gardens led by Cllr Lisa Greasley; Health and Welfare led by Cllr Magda Khan and Community Liaison led by Cllr Leith Hallatsch. The mayor gave a verbal update of actions agreed and it was stipulated that town councillors would contribute to a photographic survey of any coach problems identified on the weekend of October 19 and 20 (to coincide with the two main half-term weeks). Any issues that were identified should be sent direct to Mayor Saunders, who would collate the information for the group.
