THE Bishop of Carlisle officiated at the licensing service of the Rev David Wilmot as priest-in-charge of St Oswald’s Church, St Mary’s, Rydal and Rydal Hall. Representatives of his previous benefice at Windermere and Troutbeck joined the packed congregation as community leaders welcomed David and his wife Margaret to the village. After the uplifting service, everyone stayed to enjoy informal chat over a glass of wine and homemade cake. 

EVENSONG at Manchester Cathedral was a highlight of the annual parish outing. The group enjoyed a full day of sightseeing and shopping in the city before gathering for the evening service and the journey home. 

HERITAGE open day at Allan Bank is an annual event offering free entrance. This will be tomorrow (Friday, 10.30am-5pm). There will be talks on the Keswick School of Industrial Art, and guided walks in the grounds. This National Trust house is open daily and incorporates an art exhibition by Karen Lester as well as Billie Buzzard’s wild garden trail for children. THE autumn season of the Bateman Club starts on September 26 (2.30pm) at the parish hall, when Ian Jones will give a magic lantern tour of the Lakes, from Victorian glass plate negatives. At the meeting, there will be leaflets available showing speakers up to December. 

ST ANNE’S Parish Church is holding a coffee morning at the parish hall (there being no coffee morning in Staveley) on Saturday (10am). There will be a raffle and the usual stalls, and all are welcome.   

ST ANNE’S Parish Church Mothers’ Union launched its autumn season with a meal at the Watermill Inn for 16 members and friends. This was followed by communion at the parish hall presided over by the vicar. Lindy Priestley, chairman, gave a brief talk on summer and autumn events. The meeting concluded with afternoon tea and biscuits.

AT THE meeting of Troutbeck WI, Joanne Halliwell, an actress from Fulwood, Preston, entertained the members by playing Betsy, the scullery maid.
