GET ready to pass "Go" and collect £200 - the new Lakes-themed version of Monopoly will star locations voted for by the public to occupy "showcase squares" like Mayfair and Park Lane.

"We expect to be wonderfully spoilt for choice putting this game together,” said George Shrimpton of Winning Moves UK, the company behind the newly announced game.

“The board is a blank canvas at the moment and we are looking and appealing predominantly for Lakes landmarks," said custom games executive Mr Shrimpton, as top-hatted mascot Mr Monopoly launched the forthcoming property-trading game on Windermere's shores.

"However, any Lakes connections down to Lancaster in the south and Carlisle in the north, including Cumbria, will be very seriously considered."

Winning Moves UK is to produce the latest version of the iconic 84-year-old board game under licence from its owners, Hasbro.

"We are extremely excited to be producing it," said Mr Shrimpton, who expects the game to be "a world seller".

"We looked at many national parks across the UK and the Lakes was the clear winner."

The public has until October 16, 2019, to vote, with favourites likely to include England's tallest peak and largest lake, Scafell Pike and Windermere; Wordsworth's Dove Cottage at Grasmere; Kirkstone Pass; Simon Rogan's Cartmel restaurant L'Enclume; Ulverston's Hoad monument; Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's home at Near Sawrey; Barrow shipyard BAE Systems; and even Oxenholme railway station, instead of King's Cross or Marylebone.

Cumbria Tourism managing director Gill Haigh said it was "completely fitting" the new game would be themed on the Lake District and Cumbria.
