A GRANDMOTHER is calling on the community to support a Barrow charity which will one day help her disabled grandson.

Retired postmaster, Ingrid Guy, is praising the services of the Barrow District and Disability Association for its 'invaluable' role within the Barrow community.

The charity is particularly special to Mrs Guy whose 18-month grandson, Oliver, suffers from a rare disorder known as vacterl association.

The disorder involves a variety of conditions, including chronic kidney disease and spina bifida.

Mrs Guy, who volunteers for the fundraising team at the BDDA, said the charity will provide future help and support for her grandson.

She said: "Having a disabled family member just brings it home for you and shows you how difficult it can be for families.

"The charity will help Oliver and his family in lots of different ways.

"It will provide advice about what sort of aid is available for the disabled community as well as being a social hub.

"I have no idea what the disabled community would do without the centre, it's absolutely vital for the community."

The BDDA plans on converting its current site into a larger facility after it was bequeathed £96,000.

However, the charity needs your help to raise the remaining £120,000 by getting involved in its a ‘build-a-brick’ scheme.

If you would like to become a part of the BDDA legacy, you can purchase an imaginary brick for £1 each where the customer will receive a certificate and their name will go on an imaginary ‘brick wall’.

Since the scheme was launched four weeks ago, the BDDA has raised £4,708.65 towards its £120,000 goal.
