BRIGHTER, more energy-efficient lights have been proposed for Kendal Library's ground floor.

Cumbria County Council plans to decommission the old glass-globe pendant lights but keep them in place as "a decorative character feature" and to prevent damaging the Grade II-listed library's barrel-vaulted ceiling.

The new lighting is described as "minimal and unfussy". It has been chosen to improve uneven lighting levels, which are "not deemed satisfactory for ease of reading and way-finding in the library".

The old lights are also said to "present significant maintenance challenges" with access and health and safety issues such as changing bulbs, fuses and wiring.

The plans for the Stricklandgate building, which opened in 1909, are to be decided by South Lakeland District Council.

Kendal Town Council has raised no objections.
