ONE of the most exciting and expressive of all the art forms returns to the Brewery on Thursday (September 19, 8pm).

Movement driven emotive work, from a bold new choreographic voice Victoria Fox, is centre stage at the Kendal arts centre in Still I Rise, performed by acclaimed dance outfit Tribe.

The Brighton-based dance company was formed in 2016 to create and tour original contemporary dance, quickly gaining a reputation for a gutsy emotive and visceral choreographic style with a striking visual aesthetic. Choreographer and Tribe's artistic director Victoria strives to create performances that are relevant to her audience by being both socially aware and astute, creating movement that speaks and connects, drawing from her 19 years professional experience as a dancer with international and world renowned companies.

Still I Rise is performed by an all-female cast and channels the resilient, unapologetic nature of the iconic poem by Maya Angelou. An unflinching relentless hope for the human spirit runs through this dance work. Cinematic sounds from pounding beats to stirring classical arias, drives the journey onwards.

"I have a desire to see female dancers really owning the stage, to take the space," says Victoria, who has danced with Jasmin Vardimon and CandoCo dance companies, the British Paraorchestra and Silesian Dance Theatre Poland, among others. She adds: "Raw and physical, subtle and extreme, I want to see women enable each other and represent the full range of their strengths, virtuosic to vulnerable, the realities in which we live and the journey we continue.”

“It’s about a physicality and expression of our bodies full range and abilities from the depths of the belly to own personal experience, creating movement that speaks and connects. ‘’
