A FERRIS wheel 35 metres high will be the centrepiece of a city's Christmas celebrations after Lancaster City Council's planning committee gave it the go-ahead.

They also approved plans for an ice rink to return to Lancaster's Dalton Square for the next five years. Some 35,000 skaters laced up borrowed boots there last year, travelling from as far away as Scotland and the Midlands.

The big wheel will be located close to The Borough pub and restaurant at the northern end of Dalton Square.

The Georgian townhouse pub's owners of 14 years, Hannah and Martin Horner, are behind the Lancaster on Ice venture, having long envisaged transforming the historic square into a winter wonderland.

This year's celebrations will also feature a new Christmas market, along with a tipi tent serving refreshments.

"We wanted to build on the success of last year's event by bringing something even more ambitious to the square, so we are delighted to have gained planning permission for the big wheel this year," said Martin.

“We were overwhelmed not only by the number of skaters and spectators that came to Lancaster on Ice last year but also the overall positive reception from residents and businesses in Lancaster and far beyond.

“We know Lancaster is a brilliant place with something very special to offer both residents and visitors. We hope the rink, big wheel, Christmas markets and tipi will go some way towards making Lancaster a real destination for those looking for a special festive experience this Christmas.”

Lancaster on Ice will run from November 23, 2019 to January 5, 2020 (closed Christmas Day). To book tickets, see www.lancasteronice.co.uk
