MILNTHORPE...

TWENTY representatives of different groups and societies met at the Cross Keys Hotel to discuss the 75th VE Day celebrations.

This will take place on May 8, 2020, during the May bank holiday which has been brought forward to mark the event.

Chaired by Clive Davidson, the meeting heard that activities would take place on the playing field on that day. Already booked are Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band and Wor Vera a female singer from the North East who will be leading tea dances.

There will be a church service celebrating peace.
Lots of other ideas were mooted.

These included a wellbeing area run by local surgeries, old fashioned games, therapeutic art, a display of war memorabilia and old vehicles and fairground rides. These will be considered and discussed at further meetings.

HOLME...

KEEN bird watcher, the Rev Clive Duxbury, gave Holme Mothers’ Union a talk entitled The Birds - Our Teachers.

He gave a few examples of this title, such as ravens teach that we need to have faith that God will provide what we need, but that we also need to help ourselves.

He quoted from the bible ‘God helps those who help themselves’.

After pigeons have a drink they tilt their head upwards as if saying thank you and we should show gratitude to God for all his gifts given by his grace.

Song birds, including the lark and wren, use their voices to advertise that they are there, to warn of danger and to keep contact with other birds.

As Christians we need to sing our hymns and praises with meaning to celebrate Jesus’ birth, atonement and resurrection.

As always Clive’s talk was not only thoughtful and informative, but amusing!
In October the Holme group is having a change of date and time and are invited to join Kendal MU at Kendal Parish Church on Wednesday, October 9 (2pm).

The speaker is there to explain this year’s theme: Mothers’ Union Listen, Observe and Act.
The meeting on November 5 will include guest speaker Rose Roberts talking about Days For Girls, a charity which provides cotton protection for young girls in poor countries.
