AN 11-year-old from Crosthwaite has been named junior world gurning champion.

Summer Dawson, who attends Dallam School, Milnthorpe, won the title at the Egremont Crab Fair.

A highlight of the annual event is the World Gurning Championships, where competitors distort their faces into weird and wonderful shapes in a bid to take home the trophy.

Summer’s mother, Tiree, finished third in the ladies’ category this year, and second in 2018.

Tiree said: “I think we’ve just always pulled silly faces. It’s something we’ve always done - it’s something I always did when I was little. It just made sense to enter the world championships as they were quite local.”
