A ROAD in Kendal town centre is to close for three days from Sunday while urgent repairs are carried out to a collapsed public sewer.

Cumbria County Council has agreed to temporarily close Stramongate to through traffic on the town centre side of the bridge to allow United Utilities to carry out the work.

Temporary traffic lights will maintain access to Sand Aire House and Bridge Mills. A signed diversion route will be in place via Station Road, Victoria Bridge and Blackhall Road for traffic approaching from the A6. Wildman Street will remain open for traffic entering Kendal from the A684 and to enable traffic to enter both Castle Street and Beezon Road.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We always try to avoid closing roads completely when we are carrying out essential repairs.

"In this case, it was unavoidable due to the sheer number of other utilities located in the same place which means we need to work very carefully. This short, temporary road closure will help us do the work safely and quickly. We will do our best to finish as fast as we can and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
