SOUTH Lakeland is all set for a spectacular week with a series of events taking place to mark bonfire night.

Perhaps the most unique experience will be had by those aboard the ‘Northern Belle’, a 1930s-style luxury train, on Saturday evening.

From the Arnside viaduct, 300 passengers will be able to view the dazzling fireworks display on Arnside pier while tucking-in to a seven-course dinner with champagne.

Jeanette Snape, managing director of Northern Belle, said: “We contribute to the cost of the display and it is a truly wonderful sight watching the fireworks reflected in the estuary water below.”

The fireworks can also be enjoyed, for free, from Arnside promenade, with a “show-stopper” of a display being anticipated. Gates open at 5.30pm.

Jason Walton, of the Arnside fireworks team, said: “This is going to be a really exciting display. We launch the fireworks from Arnside pier, over the Kent estuary, which is beautiful.

“We’re getting a reputation for being bigger and better every year so we’re putting on a show-stopper this time.”

Another free fireworks display is being hosted by Kendal Rugby Club and its member volunteers, in association with Kendal Town Council and the rotary clubs of Kendal and Kendal South Westmorland.

Thousands are expected to attend the event tomorrow evening - only the second time it has been hosted by Kendal RUFC - with gates opening at 5pm.

A club spokesman said: “We are very proud to be able to put this on for the town. It’s important for the club to be a central part of the town and community, and we look forward to seeing everybody come down and enjoy the fireworks.”

Another rugby club taking part in the festivities is Windermere, with it hosting a display at Dawes Meadow, Bowness, on Sunday.

In the village of Cartmel Fell, near Grange-over-Sands, a procession from the parish hall will begin at 6pm on November 9, with an effigy of Guy Fawkes being carried down to the bonfire before the fireworks begin. This is a ticketed event.
