A SECTION of the A590 is set to be closed overnight for two nights this weekend forcing motorists to take major detours.

Highways England bosses confirmed that a 'strategic diversion' would be in place this Friday and Saturday between 7pm and 5am both nights between Meathop and Witherslack.

The full eastbound closure on Friday and Saturday is due to pothole and undulations repairs set to take place along the dual carriageway, road chiefs said.

Ulverston councillor, David Webster, said: “The road surface is like riding a big dipper, the road edges have sunk dramatically.

“The work is definitely necessary despite the inconvenience, and it is actually breaking down - the carriageway is practically splitting. It needs repair."

A spokesman for Highways England advised a diversion route, with signs, would be in place to help drivers.

The alternative route for travellers arriving from the M6 could be found along the A592 to Newby bridge.

The spokesman said: “For larger vehicles like lorries, drivers will have to take a longer route.

"But most lorries will in all likelihood be going north to the M6.”

“For the avoidance of doubt the route will not be blocked this evening or before Friday.

"We apologise for any confusion that may have come about as a result of the sign near Meathop.”
