WINTER brrrrrrrrrrr. . . a time of year where we all need to take extra care with our health.
The flu jab, turning up our thermostats a notch and wrapping up is vital, but no matter how well we look after ourselves, the change in season can result in a stay in hospital, writes PAM LEWIS.
While in hospital we can be confident of receiving the necessary care we need and for those of us lucky enough to have support, returning home is a safe period of convalescence, crucial for our recovery.
However, for some of us it can be a very different picture, especially for those who live alone or who have caring responsibilities, a period of rest and recuperation may not seem realistic and is often an impossible option.
Age UK South Lakeland offer a 'Home from Hospital' service upon discharge from hospital to provide weekly support with domestic tasks and shopping etc. for up to six weeks or until those of us needing support are able to retain independence.
Residents of South Lakeland can refer themselves or their relatives to the service; we will carry out an assessment to identify the support required.
Cumbria Reablement Service can provide short term personal care – they will also carry out an assessment to ensure support is in place as soon as possible.
Both services are designed to support people to re-build their strength and confidence and our teams work closely with NHS staff to try and ensure that all necessary equipment and aids are available to help people to adapt to changing circumstances.
