A woman who was swept to her death in the devastating floods has been named.

Over the last week, northern England and the Midlands were battered with a months worth of rain in just one day.

This resulted in the death of former High Sheriff Annie Hall.

Mrs Hall served as the county's High Sheriff - a ceremonial role representing the sovereign - in 2017 and has been described as a "great leader".

Marcia Reid Fotheringham High Sheriff of Cumbria understands the impact of flooding she said: "I do have to say that it really is totally devastating watching the details and the impact of the floods in Yorkshire.

"Living in Cumbria, we certainly can relate to how tough and traumatic it must be for all of those affected.

"While I do not know the specifics, to learn of a death occurring from the floods - and that the person who passed away was a former High Sheriff, reminds all of us about the fragility of life.

"Anyone and everyone affected will be dealing with the aftermath for a very long time.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the family - and with all who have been affected in such a terrible way.

"I must note the positive impact that we have seen from the strong Yorkshire community; they are clearly helping each other to cope with the devastation that seems to be all around them."

Derbyshire Police said Mrs Hall's body was found in the early hours of Friday after she was swept away by water in Darley Dale, near Matlock.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely and tragic death of my friend, and former High Sheriff, Annie Hall," Derbyshire Police's Chief Constable Peter Goodman said.

"Annie was a great leader in Derbyshire in both industries and on the civic front. She will be hugely missed."

Her family also released a statement, saying: "It is with great sadness that we, the family of Annie Hall, report her sudden passing.

"We are in great shock and grieving."

Pauline Latham, former MP for Mid Derbyshire, paid tribute to Mrs Hall in a post on Twitter.

"My heart goes out to the family and friends of former Derbyshire High Sheriff Annie Hall who died tragically in yesterday's floods," she said.

"She was a great champion of our county and will be sorely missed."

A post on the Twitter account of the Derbyshire High Sheriff, a post currently held by Lord William Burlington, said: "Unimaginably tragic news that former High Sheriff Annie Hall lost her life in the Derbyshire floods.

"She was a very special person and an inspirational force for good in the county."
