A HEDGELAYING competition was held just outside Arnside, the first of the Lancashire and Westmorland Hedgelaying Association’s winter ‘grand prix’ events.

Hedges were laid in the ‘traditional Westmorland style’, and were judged for being stock proof, being well-staked, having good-cutting angles and a tidy trim, and for their hedge re-growth qualities.

The event, hosted and organised by Arnside & Silverdale Area of Natural Beauty (AONB), was the first of six which will be held over the coming months.

Dougie Watson, countryside officer for Arnside & Silverdale AONB, said: “Reviving, celebrating and getting local young people trained and competent in the traditional rural skills and craft of hedgelaying is really important to preserve the living legacy and character of our hedgerows and the special qualities of our rural landscape.”

The championship class was won by Craig Proctor, the open class by William Bell, the novice class by James Yates-Bell, and the starter class by John Martindale. James Yates-Bell also took home the samurai saw prize for best axe-work on the day.
