SEAN Dyche believes his side’s ‘effective’ play has got them firing again in the Premier League.

Burnley were far from at their best in the first half at Watford last time out but rallied in the second half for what on paper looked like a convincing 3-0 victory.

Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and James Tarkowski got the goals as the Clarets converted three of their five shots on targets to pick up all three points at Vicarage Road.

That backed up victory over West Ham United at Turf Moor by the same scoreline and lifted Dyche’s side up to seventh in Premier League, Crystal Palace the visitors to East Lancashire on Saturday.

“I think since the turnaround at the turn of the year, I think our goalscoring record has been really good and really pleasing,” said the Clarets boss.

“I think that is more effective play and we want to make better quality chances and then equally take the chances when they come.

“Saturday’s chances weren’t necessarily better quality but we took them and that is important in the Premier League - the best do that with aplomb.

“The best, when it is a tight game, they find a way to win, and we have to look to try and do that mentally, physically and organisationally to try and take the chances when we can because it is difficult in the Premier League to get the chances, let alone take them.”

Dyche is not getting carried away by his side’s lofty league position, the same finish in 2018 taking them into the Europa League.

Just six points separate fifth and 17th however with the Hornets bottom the pile after the Clarets took all three points on

Saturday.

The respective league positions didn’t show in the first 45 minutes though with the visitors needing a marked improvement after the break to get the job done.

“We have had a good result on Saturday and one before that,” Dyche said, when asked about his side’s position in the top half of the table.

“The next one (Crystal Palace) is the most important one.

“My biggest gripe at half time was that we were waiting for things to happen and you can’t do that in the Premier League.

“We have learnt that and the group know that.

“That is when you get things badly wrong if you wait for the opposition to give you something because they are not going to in the Premier League and Watford certainly didn’t today, credit to them.

“They wanted to win, they are looking for their first home win and they went about it right in the first half.

“We were not miles off but we affected it in the second half.”
