LEE and Bernadette Kitchingman gave a very professional presentation to the Kendal and District Engineering Society on the ‘History and Impact of the LKAB iiron ore mine in Kiruna In Northern Sweden’.

They described how one of the richest and purest seams of Iron Ore in the world was discovered with the help of the local Sami population in the 18th Century.

The town of Kiruna was formed and a railway was built to link the mine to the ice free port of Narvik in Norway.

Today, the town centre of Kiruna is being moved several miles because of the risk of subsidence.

This was an excellent presentation supported by superb photography.

The next meeting will feature a talk by Bill Nelson of the 1818 Auction House near Crooklands on ‘A life in the day of an Auctioneer,’ and takes place at 7.15pm on December 11 at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal.
