GEOLOGY is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, its structure and the processes acting on them.
Cumbrian geology has provided natural resources from Neolithic time to the present. Cumbrian rocks and minerals are used locally and exported around the UK and internationally. Neolithic volcanic greenstone axes from Langdale (pictured above) have been found across Britain and Ireland; haematite was mined and smelted in west Cumbria; and St Bees Head sandstone used for buildings in Liverpool and New York.
