POLICE officers in Cumbria are warning of hazardous driving conditions on roads in the county.

The areas affected are Kendal and the Lakes, with some major roads also extremely icy.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice yesterday.

A warning has also been issued to motorists after a number of routes have been closed as a result of the weather.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "As winter sets in we will see more sights like this (referring to the picture). As beautiful as it is and as capable as your vehicle may be, there are reasons why such roads are closed.

"Please do not ignore road closed signs. Yesterday (Sunday) several motorists ignored the signs putting others and themselves at risk."

On Sunday morning, just before 11am, police and emergency services were called to the report of a two-vehicle collision on Kirkstone Pass.

Roads still closed as a result of the weather:

  • A592 Kirkstone Pass both ways closed from A591 Ambleside Road Cook's House Corner, Windermere to A5091 Park Brow Glenridding.
  •  Wrynose Pass both ways closed between Fell Foot Farm and the Hardknott Pass.
  •  Honister Pass both ways closed between the Seathwaite turn off and the Keswick turn off.
  •  Whinlatter Pass both ways closed from B5292 Low Lorton to A66 Braithwaite.
