1. Walk up Mirk Lane from beside the bus shelter. After passing Merewood Lodge bear left on the bridleway up into woodland. Turn left (signed Holbeck Lane) past Wood Farm and continue up a track to Castle Syke Farm. Turn right onto Holbeck Lane. Pass a section of wall that has been lowered to offer stunning views over Windermere. Some say that the wall was lowered for a visit by Kaiser Wilhelm II, but since it is engraved 1948 it could be just hearsay (the Kaiser died in 1941). Pass the bridleway to the A591 at a double bend and after 200 yards fork right onto a descending path signed A592. Cross Bridge Lane then continue downhill and cross Trout Beck via two splendid footbridges, built to replace those damaged by Storm Desmond in 2015. Walk up the track to the A592 and turn right onto the roadside footway for 400 yards.

2. At the bottom of a slope cross the road and go through a field gate onto a grassy terraced track passing a beautiful ancient larch. Cross Dodd’s Lane and continue along the lane to Holehird Gardens. To walk through the gardens (No Dogs) go through a high gate and take the left path to the upper gardens. Keep left to go up steps (may be slippery) and out through a wicket gate with an animal grid and stile. Cross the meadow and rejoin the lane. Turn right and at Far Orrest Farm turn right, signed Crosses Farm. Follow a grassy track to a gate and stile in the field corner. Continue ahead to Crosses Farm. Turn left on the road and after 200 yards right into Low Hagg Wood onto the path signed St. Katherine’s and Orrest Head. Exit the wood via a kissing gate, turn left and follow the well signed path to the summit of Orrest Head.

3. From the top turn left, aiming towards a large white house (Applethwaite Hall) across the valley and descend through woodland. Cross a wall stile and turn right through a kissing gate. Keep to the main path, passing a junction off to the left, and exit the woods via a stone-weighted field gate. A fine view of Windermere town and lake appears ahead. Descend to the A591 and cross by the central reservation. For the shorter walk turn right and descend into Windermere. To continue, turn left, cross Thwaites Lane and turn right beside a 50-mph sign onto a signed footpath. Head to the right end of woodland ahead, cross the railway, pass garages onto Ghyll Road and keep straight on across a road and bridge. Turn right beside the ghyll on the path signed School Knott, crossing Mill Beck Close. Go through a high gate and turn left. Walk uphill to a high kissing gate and turn left. Follow the path through woodland and pasture to join a gated road. Cross (or pass) the cattle grid and keep ahead where the road bends right. After Whasdyke Farm turn left over a wall stile onto a signed footpath going beside a barn then turning right, signed Ings Village. Keep straight ahead, through a gate and over a wall stile and meet a gated road. Turn left and follow the road under the railway. and down into Ings.
