FRUSTRATED residents of Oxenholme have expressed their disappointment at the poor state of an area where gas pipe renewal work has recently been undertaken.

The area in question is on Bolefoot, a circular thoroughfare just off Helmside Road.

The main restoration work to the area has been completed but deep tyre marks and other damage to verges from heavy goods vehicles have remained andmany residents said it fell well short of the required standard.

The residents’ disquiet was heightened as when the work was in progress, temporary lights were put in position on Helmside Road to control the flow of traffic, causing delays and disruption.

“It was logjammed at times and given that it’s a busy route with access to the railway station residents suffered,” said Steve Warner, secretary of the Oxenholme Residents’ Association.

“Vehicles were regularly mounting the pavement to pass each other and as it was impossible to park outside the shop/post office.

“They lost trade as well.”

Mr Warner said the situation was further exacerbated by the separate work by the junction with Burton Road, which he said prompted more vehicles to use Oxenholme as a short cut to by pass the traffic jams there.

Traffic has become a continual problem in the village especially due to the increased number of rail commuters using Oxenholme station.
