BY ALL means let us all "move on" from the sterile Brexit debate that has consumed too much of our time for so long (Letters, December 19, 'We can all move on now').

But now comes the hard bit. The rhetorical slogans that won Boris Johnson the election will cut no ice in the hard negotiations to come.

A "global Britain" freed from the "dead hand of Brussels" striding into a “golden future” put Boris Johnson into No 10, but won't work when discussing the price of fish in Hamburg or machine tool exports in Peking. To tell the leaders of other countries "Just get it done" won't seem a very fruitful line of argument.

The next 12 months will show us whether our Prime Minister knows the difference between style and substance; the evidence so far is not encouraging.
