A FURNESS entrepreneur’s planning apprehensions have melted away after South Lakeland District Council granted permission for his new ice cream venture.

Steven Darvill, owner of the Handmade Ice Cream Company, which is currently based at Haverthwaite, lodged an application to expand his frozen dairy operation.

Mr Darvill is looking to grow the size of his company’s manufacturing plant as well as to open a new ice cream parlour at Crakeside Business Park in Greenodd.

The move will see the Handmade Ice Cream Company offer its natural ice cream direct to the public, while continuing to supply its additive-free products to restaurants and other businesses.

He said: “We’re over the moon with the decision.

"We’ve needed to expand for some time now and the green light couldn’t come soon enough.”

Mr Darvill said a number of new jobs would be created as a result of the expansion.

He believes the new venture will require the creation of at least one retail managerial position, as well as a handful of part-time seasonal roles.

He said the new parlour is set to open its doors in Easter and is planning a 'Grand Sundae' opening event.

“Everything will be produced on site," he said.

"There will be an outdoor seating section for people to come down to when the weather’s better.

“We’re really excited by all the interest and requests we’ve been getting from people in surrounding towns like Ulverston."
