THE speaker at the recent meeting of Kendal Rotary was David Ellwood who talked about ‘Rope Making in Kendal’.
David owned the last ‘rope walk’ in Kendal which was located at Stockbeck.
At one time there were rope walks in nearly every town and Kendal had at least three and there was one in Milnthorpe.
They are called ‘walks’ because the workers would have to walk up and down whilst the twist was put into the rope, bearing in mind that ropes were made in continuous long lengths of up to 250 yards.

AT the Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservatives’ lunch held at The Villa, Levens, Peter McCall, the county’s police and crime commissioner, gave an interesting and informative talk on what has been happening in the community.
He is enjoying his job and he told of some of the amusing incidents when the detainees said they were innocent of the crime.
Policing has changed over the years and police on the beat are not necessary as they have different units in the office.
Cumbria is the second safest county in the country.
Crime money taken from the detainees is given to various charities.
Four years ago, there were 1,120 police officers and by next year hopefully there will be 2,016.
Several questions were asked and answered.

KENDAL Inner Wheel Club met at the Stonecross Manor Hotel for the January meeting.
It was indeed a great start to the New Year as instead of a speaker, the club were delighted to welcome two very talented musicians.
Bruce Carnaffin on clarinet and Mo Witham who played the guitar, entertained members to a jazz concert.
They played as a duo and also as soloists with the occasional vocal from Bruce.
The items spanned hits from the last century - all well known and this was indeed a very special start to 2020.
