REPAIRS to railings which separate a main access route to a kids’ play area in Windermere from a nearby stream are to be carried out by Cumbria County Council (CCC).

The situation was highlighted by Nick Hesford, who owns a property in the area, and he pointed out that the water course, Scout Beck, was often harmless looking but became deep and dangerous in bad weather when water backed up.

He said gaps in the old style metal railings close to the small bridge at the top of Upper Oak Street, which he had previously reported, had not been attended to and worsening winter meant there was a growing danger.

Mr Hesford’s concerns, which were highlighted in the Westmorland Gazette of January 2, prompted an urgent review of the situation by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC).

However SLDC have now confirmed the damaged railings lie outside the park and are therefore CCC’s responsibility.

The latter body has been alerted to the situation and are understood to be addressing it as a matter of urgency.
