1. Walk alongside the road towards Kentmere. The factory that is now Kentmere Packaging was originally a corn mill (hence the name Barley Bridge).

From the 18th century there were mills on both sides of the river that processed wool or cotton or made wooden bobbins. Between 1906 and 2008 this factory produced specialist photographic paper. At Scroggs Bridge keep left onto Browfoot Lane. For 300 years until the beginning of the 20th century this was a busy manufacturing area.

In 1859 Fellfoot Mill claimed to be the largest bobbin mill in the north of England. A large fire in 1866 took Kendal Fire Brigade only 32 minutes to yoke horses and travel the six miles there.

Continue past Goose Howe and Browfoot Farm driveway. At a left bend in the road turn right down the bridleway signed Kentmere Hall. At Ulthwaite, site of a14th century corn mill, turn left. Pass Croft Head, go through a gate, and after 100 yards turn right onto the footpath signed Kentmere Hall. Cross Park Beck (which used to power a mill here) and pass Kentmere Pottery. Continue along the tarmacked lane to H&V Factory, turn right, cross the river bridge then turn right onto the road.

2. After 550 yards turn left onto the bridleway signed Longsleddale. Walk up the stony track, passing through a high gate to the highest point of the walk where there was a lead mine in the 18th – 19th century. Enjoy splendid views to the north over Kentmere village. The path swings left and approaches a wall on the right.

Turn right through a field gate (with a waymarker) and cross a pasture. Go through a gate and turn right along the track to Park House. The tarmacked lane continues ahead and descends towards Hall Beck. Before reaching the bridge turn right onto the path signed Elf Howe. On the left beside the Beck are remains of a kiln. This was probably an ‘ealinghearth’ that produced dry kilnwood for smelting lead.

The path crosses a lovely clapper bridge which also served as a dam for a mill downstream, then ascends through the ruined farm of Elf Howe. Go left through the field gate at the top, walk down beside the wall then across a field to a gate. Descend over the next field to Elf Howe Lane.

3. Turn right and descend to beside the Kentmere road. Turn immediately left onto the bridleway to Scroggs Farm. Follow the track through a farmyard and along the lane to Hall Lane. Turn right towards Barley Bridge but do not cross the bridge. Turn left and follow the riverside road to a footpath on the right signed Staveley Village.

Follow the riverside path and cross the footbridge which is designed to represent a wood shaving from the former bobbin mill. Turn right, walk through the Mill Yard and turn left to leave by the vehicle entrance. Turn right onto Main Street to return to the village hall.
