100 YEARS AGO - 1920

A DE HAVILLAND aeroplane visited Grange. The journey occupied about 25 minutes and the height averaged 2,000 feet. Instead of taking the shorter and more direct route across the bay from Morecambe, the pilot thought it advisable to follow the coast line via Carnforth, as the aeroplane and engine were new.

50 YEARS AGO - 1970

THE Lake District Planning Board approved in principle the making of a by-law which would put an end to water skiing on Coniston Water, with a proposed overall speed limit of 10mph. The hope was to help water skiers to develop their sport under certain controls on nearby Windermere.

25 YEARS AGO - 1995

HORDES of people, or twitchers as they are commonly known, flocked to Pine Lake Resort near Carnforth for a glimpse of the rare trans-Atlantic visitor, the Lesser Scaup. The stray duck was a welcome present for the birdwatchers, as it represented the first ever sighting of the species in Lancashire and the eighth in Britain and Ireland.
