NORMAN Holloway's picture in the Gazette on February 6, 2020 showed the James Cropper monument in Abbot Hall park between the playground and Jenning’s Bridge.
Mr Cropper was the last Liberal MP for Kendal from 1880 to 1885, and the first chairman of Westmorland County Council. He was the founder of the paper mill at Burneside which took his name in 1845.
Mr Cropper became a JP and Deputy Lieutenant for Westmorland. In 1875 he became High Sheriff of Westmorland. He died in 1900 aged 77.
