TALENTED performers from a Dalton secondary school are showcasing their creativity with a production of a Disney favourite this week.

Pupils from Dowdales School in Dalton will show off their hard work with a number of performances of Disney’s Aladdin Jr.

The spectacular 60-minute musical, designed for middle school-aged performers, is based on the 1992 Disney film and the 2014 Broadway adaptation.

The cast includes more than 50 Key Stage Three pupils led by the Dowdales performing arts department.

This year the school have a split cast to ensure all the pupils have a chance to shine.

The Dowdales head of performing arts Laura Waddington said: “Having a regular creative outlet is not just part of a well-rounded education – it is essential for a student’s emotional health and wellbeing.

“Producing a show brings various art forms together and provides growth opportunities for a variety of learners.

“Our students and staff have worked so hard in rehearsals and they cannot wait to perform this fun musical.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to Dowdales and transporting them to the world of Aladdin.”

The school has already welcomed more than 360 primary school children from Furness to watch the performance.

It is playing at Dowdales until Thursday this week, with performances taking place at 7pm.

The performance features Aladdin, Jasmine, and the fast-talking, wisecracking Genie as they discover mystical caves, take magic carpet rides, and outwit the evil sorcerer Jafar.

Adapted especially for young performers, this musical includes favourite Alan Menken songs such as Friend Like Me, A Whole New World, and Prince Ali as well as new numbers added for the Broadway production.

Aladdin is a folk tale of Middle Eastern origin.

Despite not being part of the original Arabic text, it is one of the best known tales in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights.

It was last year released as a film starring Will Smith in the title role alongside Naomi Scott.
