MEMBERS and guests at Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society’s first lecture for 2020 were educated and entertained by Dr Colin Penny’s talk on 'The History of Lancaster Castle'. He gave a lively presentation on how the castle had evolved from Roman times and outlined the many events that it had witnessed, including the Norman invasion, the War of the Roses, 17th century witch trials and the Jacobite rebellions, eventually housing Lancaster court and prison. Without the benefit of notes or slides he managed to transfix the audience and received enthusiastic applause at the end. The society’s next lecture will be on Thursday, March 5 at 7.30pm in the village hall, when Dr Alan Crosby will give a talk on Cartmel parish, 1550 to 1800. Visitors are welcome. Further information on membership and activities is available from Pat Rowlands on 015395 32234 or at www.cartmel-peninsula-lhs.org.uk.
