OLD cine film shot in Cumberland and Westmorland over the decades will be shown in Appleby’s Public Hall on Sunday, March 1.

The film show is the next event in the North Westmorland Arts winter programme, during which the Cumbria Film Archive will showcase the films.

The curators, Jim Bownass and Andrew Leitch, have amassed a fantastic collection of films and photographs which go back to the Edwardian period.

NWA chairman Andrew Forsyth has requested that they put together a programme with a bias towards the Eden valley. As well as footage from the Lakes, Barrow in Furness and Carlisle, the evening will see old films from Penrith, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen.

One gem of a find was some War Department film of driver training during WWII in the Lakes. The film collection is entertaining in itself, but what will bring the evening to life will be the live narration provided by Andrew Leitch employing his extensive knowledge of the events unfolding on the screen. Some of the films are old news footage with their own soundtrack, whilst others are either too old – pre-talkies – or amateur cine film which did not enable recorded sound, unlike modern video cameras or the humble mobile phone.

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and advance tickets can be bought via NWA’s website www.appleby-concerts.org.uk
