A NUMBER of key BBC services in the North West could be under threat, as the new government attempts to press ahead with its controversial media reforms.

One of the upshots of Number 10’s new plans for the public broadcaster is that many regional radio services could now face the axe.

BBC Radio Cumbria is feared to be one of the regional radio stations that could go or see its funding drastically reduced.

The moves, described by one Tory MP as a ‘vendetta’, also include national reductions - with flagship programmes to go and a considerable scaling back of the BBC’s websites planned.

Some Cumbria MPs have reacted furiously. Tim Farron said: “You only have to look at the amazing job that BBC Radio Cumbria did keeping our area up-to-date during Storm Dennis at the weekend to understand the huge role that local BBC radio stations play in our communities. Forcing the BBC to axe its local radio stations would be an act of immense stupidity and would just show out of touch the Conservative party are with people here in Cumbria.”
