A MEMORIAL to a much-loved restaurant owner who was murdered 20 years ago could soon be installed.

The Round House Hub and Cafe on Walney plans to pay its respects to Lai Yo Fu, who was tragically murdered by chef Ke Yuan at the former Chinese restaurant in February 2000.

Two decades on, the cafe now plans to build a memorial on the site to commemorate her life and service to the Round House.

Her family, including son Danny Fu, visited the building on the anniversary of her death and explained that Lai was very involved in the community.

They said she would have loved what the group was doing, said Matt Blackburn, operations manager at ZEST.

Mr Fu was born inside the Round House 40 years ago.

“It (the memorial) is definitely going to happen in the future,” said Mr Blackburn.

“We want to pay tribute to her life here at the Round House.

“It was lovely to meet her son Danny, who was actually born in the building, and his wife and child.”

Frank Cassidy, South Walney Councillor, said he wholeheartedly supported plans to remember Lai.

“The entire Barrow community was rocked when news of the tragedy emerged," he said.

“It is entirely appropriate that a blessing has taken place.

"It is one episode that will never be forgotten.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family on this very sad anniversary.”

The cafe is now used as community hub and regularly hosts charity events.

Helen Wall, South Walney Councillor, said: “It was a tragic and shocking event at the time.

“I’m sure there will be people who would like to see her remembered in a respectable way.

“The hub are a very excellent bunch of people and I am sure they will do it really well and the family will be very pleased that the family member they have lost so tragically has not been forgotten.”
