The over 65s receive more of these unwelcome calls than any other age group.

For many of us, this is a minor annoyance. But for the more vulnerable among us, these calls or texts can cause real anxiety and distress.

In many instances, these kinds of calls can lead to vulnerable people not answering their phones at all for fear of calls being one of the many unwanted nuisance ones.

If you are simply fed up of these unwelcome nuisance calls, or you have a family member or friend who could be vulnerable to some of the scams or pressured sales techniques, there are a few things you can do.

Firstly, consider registering with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) on 0345 070 0707. This service is free-of-charge and once you have registered, third parties are not allowed to call you – although some companies still do so it’s not fool proof.

It is also worth talking to your phone provider about the services they offer, which can include caller display/identification and incoming call-blocking for selected numbers. Charges may apply so you may wish to shop around for the best deal.

The key thing to remember is this: you don’t have to put up with it - there are things you can do.
