A SECOND public consultation on the future of Barrow’s high street has been launched today.

More than 700 responses were collected during an initial three-week feedback period, which forms part of the application process for government funding.

A number of options for the use of this money have been identified, forming the basis of the further public consultation launched today.

They include: improvements to the market for stall holders and shoppers; creation of new leisure and civic space; allowing more access to the Town Hall, including possible Tourist Information Centre, café and Public Sector Hub; improved bus, walking and cycling routes around the town and better mobile connectivity.

Cllr Ann Thomson, leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “To have more than 700 responses highlighted to us the degree to which the public and businesses across the borough care about the future of our high street. It’s really important we get a similar reaction to this second consultation.

“I would urge as many people as possible to get involved. We have one chance to get this right - and the potential prize is huge.”

Barrow has been selected as one of 100 towns in the running to receive a share of the £1billion Future High Street Fund.

This Wednesday between 11am and 3pm, there will be a public drop in event at the Portland Walk entrance to the Market.
