SONG writer David Miller is coming home to release his first EP with a gig – and hopefully his band will tick all the right boxes with the audience!

Singer David, 27, is from Ulverston where he attended the town’s Victoria High school, but now lives in Manchester where he plays with his country rock band – called Boxes.

And with him in the band is bass player Tom Adams, who he grew up with in Ulverston, and who also lives in Manchester now.

On March 17, Boxes will release their first single, Electric Lights, followed by the EP on March 31.

“It is everyone’s dream to be a full time band, but it is a competitive industry,” said David.

“We are going to start releasing singles every year and albums because music is a fast industry. No-one listens for too long, so you have got to keep releasing. We are working towards another album.”

David has always been well known in the area as a singer, following a family tradition.

“My mother, Jane, was a musician. She was a country singer,” he said.

“In Ulverston I won talent shows and I won the first Lakes Got Talent show. I was always writing music.

“I grew up in Ulverston at Church Road, and Tom was from Croftlands. We went our separate ways at university. I was at Lancaster and he was at Huddersfield Uni."

David studied economics at Lancaster University, but admits that music was still his number one passion at the time.

At Lancaster, David organised all the music events for the university and sang in a band. After winning one Battle of the Bands contest he got to play a support slot for Lemar.

“I was bored at Uni and to get gigs you couldn’t just sing so I had to learn how to play. I learned how to play keyboard and guitar – you have plenty of spare time at uni!” he admitted.

After university both he and Tom ended up living in Manchester. “I needed a good bass player so I rang Tom,” said David.

David writes all the songs for the band. The play together two or three times a week, and are hoping to play some of the country festivals this year following the release of their single and EP.

“For inspiration I use past history, things that you have learned about,” said David. “With country and Americana there always has to be a story so if you can put it into words you are onto a winner. Sometimes the lyrics come first, sometimes the melody, it just happens for me.”

David works at Media City in Salford, where he is involved in online sports streaming, while Tom is an AI Engineer. “But once we get home it is music, music, music,” said David. “If I wasn’t doing music it would be something creative.”

The band is David, who sings and plays rhythm guitar, bass player Tom, plus lead guitarist Josh Smith and drummer James Saunders.

The Ulverston gig is at the Kings Arms (Big Kings) in Ulverston on April 11.
